A Leadership Shake-Up
House Speaker Mike Johnson has removed Republican Rep. Mike Turner as chair of the House Intelligence Committee for the upcoming 119th Congress. The decision comes just days before Donald Trump takes office for his second term as President.
Johnson Denies Trump’s Influence
Johnson emphasized that this move was not directed by President-elect Trump but rather a House decision.
“This is not a President Trump decision. This is a House decision, and this is no slight whatsoever to our outgoing chairman. He did a great job.” – Mike Johnson
A source close to Johnson stated that the Speaker wanted to select his own committee chair, similar to how former Speaker Kevin McCarthy appointed Turner.
Turner Responds
Turner, who has been chair since 2023, said he was “very proud” of his time leading the committee.
“Under my leadership, we restored the integrity of the Committee and returned its mission to its core focus of national security.” – Mike Turner
Despite the removal, Johnson praised Turner, stating he would continue to be involved in NATO-related matters.
“It’s a new Congress. We just need fresh horses in some of these places, but I’m a Mike Turner fan. He’s done a great job.” – Mike Johnson
Democrats Express Concern
Rep. Jim Himes, the top Democrat on the committee, voiced deep concern over the decision.
“I have ice in my spine right now because that would totally change the dynamic of oversight.” – Jim Himes
He warned that removing Turner could weaken congressional oversight of the incoming administration.
“The removal of Chairman Turner makes our nation less secure and is a terrible portent for what’s to come.” – Jim Himes
When asked if Turner had upset Trump, Himes said he was unsure but noted that Turner was “not quick to bend the knee.”
What’s Next?
Johnson has not yet announced Turner’s replacement but is expected to do so Thursday. The decision could shape how the committee functions under Trump’s new administration.
